Marin Čilić - preparations for Australian Open in Academy
During the break between the trainings held within the framework of preparations for the upcoming Australian Open, we interviewed Marin Čilić, a successful Croatian tennis player, in the Umag Tennis Academy.
Impressions about Umag Tennis Academy.
“I think it is an excellent project for all the young people in Croatia. I remember that the conditions weren't so good when I was younger, we had to get by with what little we had. This centre will give young people an opportunity to significantly improve and learn, especially due to Goran's involvement. Also, everything is in one place here, from indoor and outdoor earth and concrete courts and an excellent gym, to Umag's special climate with pleasant and sunny weather even now in December. We might even get some tan, which is an excellent preparation for Australian Open.”
Unfortunately, this year we didn't get to see you at Vegeta Croatia Open. What are your impressions from 2012 when you were victorious?
“Winning at home is a special feeling. But, the fact is that the tournament evolved over the past several years, attracting better players, bringing the entire region to its feet. Since this is the first tournament I have ever won, I am really glad and honoured that apart from Zagreb, I also celebrated in Umag. It made me really happy, and I am very sorry that I couldn't play here this year. That's why I'm looking forward to next year, it will be good to come back, especially with Goran and the new team.”
Plans for 2014? Do you expect to make it into the first ten?
“Yes, that's the plan. I worked and trained really hard. Goran greatly contributed to the play, preparations and especially the training segment, which is gruelling. But, all that work and effort must be shown on the tennis court. I feel that I definitely belong into the first ten, because if I continuously play good tennis, I think that's where my place really is, so I hope to realize some good results next year...”
What is Goran like as a coach?
“Trainings are strenuous, I will certainly not be able to claim that I'm not ready when the season begins. Goran is fairly simple and training with him is always a pleasure. Today, we trained for 3 hours straight, and they flew so quickly we didn't even notice. Although trainings are hard, I always enjoy them. There's teasing and good spirit. We are a young team and I'm sure we'll continue to cooperate well in the future. In any case, all PRO Camp students will see for themselves what it's like when you get into Goran's hands.”
